Welcome to Bishop Cornish School

Welcome to our website! I hope that you enjoy browsing its pages and finding out about our remarkable pupils, staff and animals!

Bishop Cornish School is a Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School.  It is named after Bishop John Rundle Cornish who was the first Suffragan Bishop of St. Germans in 1905.Bishop Cornish is situated in beautiful grounds overlooking the River Tamar with views over Dartmoor and the city of Plymouth. Our mission statement is ‘Esteem and Educate Every Child’. At Bishop Cornish School we provide a Christian-based education for children aged 4-11 years.

The school provides a wide and varied creative curriculum; offering many opportunities for children to excel through academic, artistic, musical and physical activities. Bishop Cornish School is well known for the high standards that it achieves academically.  We endeavour to provide a disciplined, well structured, happy environment.  We believe that this gives pupils the opportunity to work and play as they achieve levels of excellence, and are prepared to take a positive and caring role in society.

3 Our staff is committed to making learning exciting and challenging. The curriculum is enriched through outdoor learning, outside visits and trips, through outside speakers and visitors and through a wide range of extra-curricular activities

We aim to make our school a happy and friendly place in which children can develop their personalities and talents, and fulfil their individual potential. We believe in developing the whole child.

Sport is important in our school. There is also a wide range of after school clubs on offer for the children, including football, tag rugby, gym, athletics, hockey, cross country, karate. Over 90% of children take part in an after-school sports club. Teams enjoy success in tag rugby, athletics, football, high fives and many other sports.

We have a strong musical tradition with orchestra, junk band, samba band and voice clubs. 40% of children play orchestral instruments.

The school has its own animal centre, comprising goats, geese, chickens, ducks, turkeys, doves, rabbits and guinea pigs!  The children DSC02893 are very involved with the animals’ care during breaks and lunch time, and the animals and children win a considerable amount of awards at the annual Royal Cornwall Show.

There are strong links with the local churches of St. Stephen’s and SS Nicholas and Faith, and the Diocese of Truro. Our Christian beliefs are important to us and are bourne out through our care for one another. The children are instrumental in organizing events for many, varied charities and supporting those less fortunate than themselves.

Our Education Centre is an exciting development; it was achieved through extensive fundraising. It is an eco-friendly, sustainable building using cedar wood, straw bales, sheep’s wool, etc. and with a water harvesting system and photovoltaic panels. This is used by the school for creative arts, before and after school provision, and for a pre-school (nursery) unit.  It was opened by HRH the Countess of Wessex and blessed by the Bishop of Truro. It won the Royal Institute of Chartered surveyors’ South West Region Award for Community Benefit in 2010 and has been included in the Pevsner guide for architecture 2014.

Parents are welcome in school.  We offer opportunities to meet through parental consultations, formal and informal meetings, concerts, church services, sports and fund-raising events.  We very much appreciate the help that they give us in a wide variety of ways.

Primary education provides vital foundations for a child’s future life and happiness.  Our aim is to ensure that these foundations are securely laid and that the children in our care receive the best education that they can and remember the years spent at Bishop Cornish with great affection.

I hope you enjoy browsing our pages and seeing what our children do.
