The School Governors and the Trustees of the Education Centre took the decision to be part of an exciting project with Ripple Energy which has enabled the school and the Education Centre to be members of a cooperative that owns the Kirk Hill Wind Farm situated in Ayrshire:
- Kirk Hill Wind Farm is made up of 8 turbines in west Scotland. It can power over 20,000 households and businesses.
- In less than 10 minutes the wind farm can generate enough electricity to power a typical home for a year
- The wind farm will save 29,667 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year by generating zero carbon electricity instead of burning dirty fossil fuels
- It is the largest people-owned wind farm operational in the UK. There are 5,600 individual members of the cooperative that owns Kirk HIll, alongside Bishop Cornish
- Bishop Cornish School and the Bishop Cornish Education Centre became the first school/preschool in the UK to be powered by their own wind farm!
Linda Sooprayen Head of Marketing said:
“Ripple Energy is on a mission to make clean energy ownership affordable and accessible for everyone, everywhere by allowing ordinary households and businesses, schools and communities to own a small piece of a large-scale wind farm or solar park and receive the greenest electricity, supplied via the grid. Ownership of the wind farms and solar parks is via a cooperative which means people own it with thousands of others and you get their share of cleaner, green energy supplied via a supplier and the grid. It’s real peoplepower in action, helping to lower electricity bills for decades! “
